As we learn about the Goddesses we personalize our experiences. We are rediscovering and reinventing stories of the Goddess, and integrating them into our own. There is no one true version of a goddess… Each variation or experience of a myth belongs to that myth. When we meditate on the Goddess we find what feels right and what fits into or own inner reality, and we find what is true to our own unique imagination. There are many ways of experiencing the goddess in meditation. Women (and men) can have profound experiences with the Goddesses during meditation or simply by opening up to the energy of what is sacred and natural in our every day life… We all are balanced with Sacred Feminine Energy transmuted through her… Masculine energy (in it’s purest form) is the source of awareness and consciousness (Shiva) :: All power comes from an inner feminine source (Shakti).
The more we recognize that women and men have both feminine and masculine qualities the more we start to see that to honor the Goddess is to honor qualities of consciousness, not gender specific ideas.
The goddesses and their symbols engage our attention because they nurture us at the very roots of our being. Meditating with a Goddess (or God) can help you work with and integrate some of your elemental qualities… those that are constructive and even the problematic ones. When the Goddess shows up she can help us feel liberated and expand our consciousness… but also, she can feel confusing and entrap us into our addictions or tendencies, revealing though- where we need to work on transforming… Whatever way the Goddess appears to us, and how we interact with her- will undoubtedly change us.
Embodying the Goddess Every Day
The Goddess is embodied by living in a conscious way through acts of honoring and celebrating the Sacred Feminine, and respecting nature and life in all forms… with compassion and connection with others and ourselves – By being aware of what is sacred, every day. To embody the Goddess we must respect that life has a series of cycles that mirror the waxing and waning cycles of the moon. The power of the Goddess is the power of the sacred feminine energy within, as it extends outward illuminating all things. To embody the Goddess is to bring to light all that is mysterious, creative and expansive… Celebrating a journey toward higher consciousness.
When you recognize life in everything around you, are receptive to it, and allow the energy to come into your heart and move you, transform and inspire you… that is when consciousness develops. When you embody the wisdom of the Goddesses you understand that the dark places are only a part of the journey and not a stopping place. The most important part of transforming spiritually is to develop a relationship with your inner world. Experiencing the Goddess within meditation is one way to bring meaning and awareness into your psyche, into your body, into your soul… and the wisdom will uplift you and sustain you through all phases of the moon and the cycles of your life.
Simple Ways of Experiencing the Goddess Within Meditation
In Meditation, Shakti manifests as our visions and feelings. The Goddess energy of the Sacred Feminine in meditation, reveals insights and inner blockages… and the vast space to dissolve them.
Use visual images… A Goddess cannot simply be described with words alone, because she is a dynamic living symbol… A visual image speaks directly to our unconscious, showing us connections and arousing feelings. There are many ways to obtain or view images of Goddesses and their symbols. These days the internet is the speediest way to simply browse what is free for viewing, however being careful to bring imagery into your space is important and there is much distortion of the sacred feminine, and it is quite easy to go astray on the internet looking for “images” of “goddesses” as many people misuse the term and exploit the sacred. That vibration is not recommended for meditation. Although, a positive outlook on the fact that society (“consumer culture”) has commodified sacred energy is to perceive it as an expansion of the Goddess’ reach.
I suggest being more specific about what type of imagery you gather. Whether you have a certain Goddess in mind or if you simply want to look at a variety of Goddess imagery, you could go to a bookstore, or library, or purchase art prints, books, posters, tapestries, a goddess inspired tarot or oracle card deck, or figures or other objects that represent the Goddess to you.
Making an altar in honor of the Goddesses, or a particular goddess, is also a wonderful way to use imagery as a way to expand your vision, understanding and awareness of the Goddess within.
There is no right or wrong way to experience the Goddesses using visual images. You simply gaze at the image and allow yourself to feel what arises. An image can sometimes stay with you for a lifetime. You may see something once and have it glued into your mind forever. So, you don’t have to stare at an image for a length of time… Simply gaze upon it, and then allow your gaze to slowly go within, using your third eye… Soften your eye lids and close them as your third eye opens… visualize the goddess and watch how she approaches you when you “call” to her.
For some, it is fun to draw a card and see what Goddess shows up for you. Others prefer to go directly to which Goddess they feel drawn to, and learn more about why the pull toward her has been happening… Both are powerful ways of experiencing the Goddess within.
There are endless ways to imagine her. I could tell you step by step how to sit and conjure up an image of a Goddess, but that would be foolish because the Goddess energy and stories and understandings within you are WITHIN YOU. An image simply reveals the connections you may remember, or feel deep inside… Each woman has unique experiences that shape her way of interacting with the world. What inspires one person, may disturb another. Sometimes disturbing images are a powerful way that the Goddess speaks to us to show us where we are wounded and need nurturing and healing though, so we must pay attention to all feelings that arise within us…
The objective is not to find the most beautiful images to display so we feel happy inside. The objective is to open up to the truth within us, which is vast and infinite and encompasses a myriad of deep dark mystery, flow and ease, as well as turbulence and sacred forces beyond measure, including a full range of emotions and expression. To experience the Goddess is to embrace your potency as a woman (or man)… to embody your True Self. To claim your power.
My favorite painter, Susan Seddon Boulet has contributed hundreds of the most amazingly beautiful and provocative representations of the Goddess, and I personally resonate with them deeply, so much so that I have carried “The Goddess Paintings” book with me for over 11 years… and have been working with her “Goddess Knowledge” cards since then as well. I like that I have the cards and the book, but either would make me content as well. I feel fortunate to own both… (I also have a lot of her calenders and prints of her other series’, mainly her one called “Shaman”, and I have her “Animal Spirit Knowledge” cards as well… all her work is so brilliant and captivating.)
I also love the “Daughter’s of the Moon” deck of cards by Ffiona Morgan… (all of which I’ve displayed below)… You can read more about both of these decks by clicking here > Oracle < There are so many other beautiful artworks and symbolic representations of the Goddesses, but I highly recommend checking out these options if you’re interested.
You might hold a particular archetype in your personality more strongly than others. It could mean that there are qualities of her that you need to develop. It is natural to feel an affinity to one or more of the Goddesses. Mythic stories of the Goddesses open us to the divine path of journeying within… into the Sacred Feminine… into the heart of Sacred Reality.
Imagination and Goddess Meditation/Embodiment Practice
By actively using our imagination and intention we make visible the forms and qualities of our divine nature. These images transform our inner landscape. We all have the power to communicate with the Goddess in our inner world, through visionary practices, working with archetypes, and setting intentions for our future.
If it helps you to gather with other women, to meditate together, then do that. But do not feel that it is necessary. You have all of the power of the Goddess within you right now. No one can give you power or take it away. YOU are in control of the flow. Take charge and be wise. Open up to your strength and trust your intuition like goddesses do. It’s in our nature. Enjoy life every day… Learn from every lesson. Quiet the mind to allow beauty and grace to bless you with abundance and comforting connections. Awaken your feminine wisdom by living sacredly- In all ways, always… Release what no longer serves you. Move forward with wide eyes and an open heart…
Let yourself recognize your own primal awareness at the core of yourself.
Imagine that your world spirals out from your heart,
like Shakti pours herself out as the Universe.
